Tim Madgwick

A&R

KWS Blank Canvas Music is the beneficiary of Tim’s years of experience in the music industry. Tim’s A&R career began in the early 1980’s when a good friend at a leading UK music publishing company urged him to get into an industry where he could do his favourite thing:  Listen to music all day and go to gigs at night!  That advice was the foundation of decades of working with top creators and publishers/labels in the music world.

After joining Magnet Records as a talent scout in 1983 gaining team experience and working with the label’s artists learning the key roles played in day-to-day label business, he joined Warner Bros Music in 1987 where he worked with writers and found new music talent while the company eventually merged with Chappell Music, becoming Warner Chappell Music (WCM) and the dominant force globally in music publishing.

Tim was appointed co-head of the WCM artist side of the creative department, specialising in early talent and developing artist readiness for signing record deals. Tim’s next move was to the newly created Warner Music (WEA) as a senior A&R manager actively signing bands and working with existing artists signed to the label.

Tim’s people skills enabled him to work closely liaising with marketing, promotion and press departments to play a prominent role within the long-term planning for the artists under his control. In 1993 Tim entered a new challenging role of artist management, and learned about the business from the artist’s perspective and the importance of a good working relationship with the artist, and later in 1996 he joined the fiercely independent Cherry Red Records, A&R area where his experience and talents morphed into a project management role with the company’s fledgling reissue and compilation releases, managing over 200 releases for the label to date.
